AI visibility for Santa Barbara businesses

AI visibility is how often ChatGPT, Google AI, Perplexity or Claude name your business when someone asks for a recommendation. Clarus is an AI visibility and digital growth agency in Santa Barbara. We measure that number for premium businesses, do the work that raises it, and report honestly on what changed.

What AI says about Santa Barbara businesses today

We ask the engines ourselves, in the words a customer would use, and we keep the answers. Three things from the scans we ran in August and September 2026.

  • When we asked ChatGPT and Claude twelve questions a Santa Barbara business owner might ask about marketing agencies, fifteen different agencies were named and the answers were built from Clutch, Reddit, Semrush's agency directory, Expertise.com and Yelp. The agencies' own websites were a minority of the sources.
  • A Santa Barbara taxi company we work with was named in one of twelve answers. Ten of the pages the AI read before answering were Yelp pages. Its own website was cited once.
  • Ask the same question ten times and the list of businesses changes. In AI answers there is no page two. The three to five names that appear most often are the ones customers hear.

How AI decides who to recommend

An AI tool does not read your website and decide you are good. It runs several hidden searches, reads small pieces of the pages it finds, and writes an answer from what those pieces agree on. Three things follow from that.

  • Each engine has its own index. ChatGPT searches Bing and its own index, Google AI uses Google, Claude uses Brave, Perplexity built its own. A business absent from Bing does not exist for ChatGPT, whatever its Google ranking.
  • Most of what the AI reads is not your site. Reviews, directories, best of lists and community threads carry the mentions. Being present and well described there is where visibility is decided.
  • Consistency and freshness count. The same facts and the same phrases across every profile, and pages that were updated recently, are what the engines trust.

What we do

The same seven steps for every business, in this order. We ran them on Clarus first.

  1. Measure. Thirty questions your customers would ask, in three phrasings, asked several times on each AI engine. We record how often you are named, who is named instead, and which pages the answers came from.
  2. Open the doors. AI crawlers allowed, pages readable without JavaScript, one canonical domain, your site in Bing and Brave as well as Google. Nothing else works if the machines cannot retrieve you.
  3. Reviews. A steady flow of honest reviews on Google, Yelp and the platform your industry uses. Volume and recency matter more than the star rating.
  4. Profiles AI reads. Google Business Profile, Yelp, Apple Business Connect, and the directories the scan shows are cited in your category. Same facts, same phrases, everywhere.
  5. Earned mentions. The best of lists, roundups and community threads the AI already cites. We get you into them with real value, never with paid placements or self published rankings.
  6. Pages that get retrieved. One page per question nobody else answers well, written answer first, with real numbers, dates and a named author.
  7. Report and repeat. A weekly scan and a monthly report: presence per engine, share of voice against named competitors, citations won and lost, and what shipped.

Questions people ask us

What is AI visibility?

How often an AI tool such as ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Perplexity or Claude names your business when someone asks it for a recommendation. It is measured as a share of answers, not as a ranking, because the same question gets a slightly different answer every time it is asked.

Is AI visibility the same as SEO?

Most of the work overlaps with SEO done properly, and we do that work too. The part that does not overlap is where AI answers are decided: each AI tool reads the web through its own index, it builds answers mostly from third party pages such as review sites and directories, and the only honest way to measure it is to ask the same questions many times and count. That is the part most agencies skip, and the part Clarus specialises in.

Can you guarantee my business will appear in ChatGPT?

No, and nobody honest can. AI answers change from one ask to the next and the sources they cite rotate every month. We measure how often you appear today, do the work that raises that number, and show you the trend every month.

How long does it take?

Technical fixes show up within weeks. Reviews and listings take one to two months to reach local answers. Content and earned mentions take two to four months. Expect visible movement by month two and a meaningful change in share of voice by month three or four.
